South Florida Autism Charter Schools, Inc. (SFACS) is the first charter school in Miami-Dade/Broward counties exclusively for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Our mission is to provide education and services to individuals diagnosed with ASD residing in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We target students with ASD who have communication deficits and/or behavioral challenges, and who may require training in self-help skills. The methodologies of B.F. Skinner’s Theory of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) are applied in conjunction with Florida Sunshine State Standards for students on a modified curriculum in order to provide the most effective individualized educational programs possible. ABA therapy is the most effective intervention available for ASD, and can be very expensive, costing anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 per student per year.
SFACS provides this service free of charge, as well as community outreach services open to the entire South Florida community. We seek to create a model for effectively teaching children with ASD under the constraints of the state’s public charter school funding mechanism. Once we are successful, it is our intention to replicate our program in the future in order to help more people. This will be accomplished by expanding programming and opening more schools, and also by serving as an example for others in the community. SFACS is a Charter School operating under the sponsorship of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and also a 501(c)(3) organization. The SFACS campus is located at the Slade Park Education Complex in Hialeah, Florida.
